Petroupoli

Explore Petroupoli, Athens

Due to its status as a suburb, the sense of a tight-knit community is more present, bringing everyone together through local markets, parks, and cultural events. Regardless, it is close enough to Athens to use all the amenities and conveniences exclusive to the city.

Considering the fact that Petroupoli is slightly further from Athens than most other suburbs, it lacks some key infrastructure, such as a Metro line. However, the municipality’s government is committed to improving, having revealed plans to build a Metro station on a new line that will connect Petroupoli to Ethniki Odos, spanning a route over 20 miles long, and 29 stations. The town also has other plans that showcase the intent to better the life of the local residents, with multiple strategies to build new schools, and new cycling lanes as well as restore existing current infrastructure.

Regardless of shortcomings, Petroupoli is an extremely attractive place to live, which fosters a great sense of community, and allows anyone to truly enjoy the Greek lifestyle, all the while remaining close to the capital, Athens.

Things to do in Petroupoli

Patras Theatre
Also known as the Theatro Patras, this is not to be confused with the theatre of a similar name in Jordan. Located in the town of Petroupoli, this Theatre was carved out from a former quarry and repurposed by the local government into a cultural hub. It is best known for hosting concerts and plays, including the annual Patras International Festival, and theatre festivals, which take place between May and September. Regardless, it is open year-round, further housing local events, and bringing the community together, and it is an ideal location to better understand and integrate into Greek culture. Besides, there is a viewpoint near the Theatre, which offers amazing sights over the city of Athens.
St. Demetrios Grove
Named after Saint Demetrios, which is a prominent Christian figure, and the patron saint of Thessaloniki, this Grove features a chapel in honor of the saint and is an important landmark for the town of Petroupoli. This Park is the town’s lungs, offering a green space full of trees, and walking paths for local residents to enjoy and escape daily life and connect with nature. The Grove is ideal for picnics, working out in the park’s outdoor gym facilities, or simply relaxing and enjoying some quiet time in nature. It also acts as a hub spot for community events, especially during religious celebrations and local festivals.
Hike Mount Hymettus
Athens and its suburbs, including Petroupoli, are surrounded by the Hymettus mountain range on the eastern side, forming a natural border of the Attica region, and being a quintessential part of the city’s skyline. The Mount boasts a plethora of trails for all types of difficulties, from beginners to experts. It is perfect for those seeking an escape from the pressures of daily life, and to experience not only nature but also to learn about history as well. As you walk along the paths, bask in the greenery the forest provides, and immerse yourself in the Kesariani Monastery, one of the last remaining Greek medieval sites, enter the Chapel of Ascension, a cave filled with icons, and marvel at the Asteriou Monastery, a still-functioning church in the middle of the forest.
